Sail Away – To Fiji

02. Sep, 2015

Our  Jeanneau Yacht 53 owner  had a great experience on its bigger sister – Mimu – a Jeanneau Yacht 57. He joined a competent crew on a passage to Fiji. Here is a brief summary of his experience:

Having left Orakei at 11:15 we headed north past Great Barrier and into open water.  Day one was light winds with a developing swell from the east.  Day 2 and 3 saw the crew settle into a regular routine and we all waited for the wind to develop beyond the 5-10 knots we were experiencing. Our first 3 days ended up with light winds and motor-sailing. Late day 3, the wind finally developed and we had full sail up.  It was a case of careful what you wished for as for day 4-6 we had 30 gusting 45 on the beam with a very messy side on swell.  Boat and crew fared well with none of them suffering any ill effects at all. Day 6 saw the wind drop and clouds clear for a great final sail into Fiji waters. We cleared the reefs and headed straight for Vuda Point where we cleared customs and had a well-deserved beer and burger at the local club. Next morning we set sail for Musket Cove and had an awesome sail with 20 knots on a beam reach. Full main and code 0 meant we blasted to Musket where the crew finally tied Mimu up for her owner. Then straight to the pool for cocktails followed by the odd beer and rum before heading home to Auckland the next day. Great adventure, great crew, great experience
