The 2017 Orakei Marine Annual Squadron Weekend was well attended and the event was a huge success. On Friday night we had an excellent race from Auckland to the Kawau Boating Club. The first few finishers were at anchor and off to the Boating Club well before dark. Other racers arrived later but everyone found ample room to anchor and the weekend festivities were well underway. Dinner specials at the club and drinks kept hungry crews and attendees well fed!
Saturday events began with an 8:00am breakfast at the Club, with crews getting organized and underway for the Kawau Island Race start. Competition was outstanding to match the sailing conditions. Some Jeanneau power and yacht owners opted for the fishing contest or a quiet cove for a fish or a swim with family. The weather continued to cooperate throughout the day leading to a superb evening at Lidgard house for the Gilligan’s Island Beach Party. Costumes were the theme of the evening and there were plenty of Ginger, Mary Ann and Thurston Howell IIIs in attendance. The Fishing & Sailing Prize Giving (along with plenty of beers) began at 5:30pm and the Members Cash Draw + Spit Roast Dinner commencing shortly after. All were well fed (as is tradition) and a good time was had by all! Live music and the party continued into late into the night!
Sunday morning dawned bright and lovely for our 8:00am breakfast at the Club. Some boats and crews got off early, but many stuck around to enjoy a cruisy day before heading back to Auckland later in the afternoon.
Squadron members and volunteers, a giant THANK YOU for a fantastic weekend, delicious food, and exceptional company. We can’t wait till next year!!!
